With the majestic Saronsberg Mountains as the picturesque backdrop; you will find Vindoux Guest Farm, a charming little treasure. Located just 5km from the main road of the small town of Tulbagh and a 90 minute drive from Cape Town.
If you are looking for peace and tranquillity; this family-owned guest farm is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. A working farm owned by Roy and Irene Ashurst; their son, Thomas Ashurst, daughter, Sophie du Toit and her husband, Driaan du Toit. Brent and I had the privilege to be invited by Astral Foods, one of South Africa’s leading poultry producers, to celebrate their new partnership with World of Birds. We heard about the amazing work they have done thus far to assist World of Birds and their continued commitment to the sanctuary. It also gave us an opportunity to explore the bird park – which I have to confess was my first time. Apart from dropping my youngest daughter off outside of the sanctuary during her grade field trip – but I suppose that one time doesn’t count. I know I’m such a bad Capetonion. This gem with its tropical setting is the largest bird park in Africa and is situated in Hout Bay. After exploring the park; we had a scrumptious lunch at the Riverside Boutique Hotel in Hout Bay. As a South African who has travelled abroad for a holiday, it was about keeping an open-mind. In essence travelling abroad is about the experience, visiting new places, different cultures and the people you meet. In 2012, I travelled to Australia along with my family to attend a wedding which occurred in November. We decided to make it a 6 week holiday and stay for Christmas. But 3 weeks into our holiday, I became homesick. I had enough and wanted to go home. And although, Australia and its people were wonderful and I enjoyed my stay up to that point, it wasn’t home. It wasn’t South Africa and best of all it wasn’t beautiful Cape Town.
I missed Cape Town and its familiarity. The things that I never imagined I would miss, I yearned for. Things that I often took for granted whilst back at home.
Winter is the perfect opportunity to explore beautiful places within the Western Cape. And there is no better place than the Overberg countryside. This time of the year, it is peaceful and relaxed.
Still exploring this beautiful town of Stanford, our next stop over was White Water Farm. Just 10 km outside Stanford you will find White Water Farm, situated in the Kleinriver valley.
To our surprise this farm was literally next to Blue Gum Country Estate that we visited. So it saved us from driving a distance. As we drove into the farm, the girls were so excited to see the horses. The picturesque landscape with lush green lawns grabbed our attention immediately. As we pulled up in front of the reception area, two beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs came to greet us.
June has been a bit of a roller coaster ride with everything that has transpired. As a family, we definitely needed a well deserved break to unwind, recap and connect. When the owners, Anton and his wife Tarryn of Blue Gum Country Estate approached me with the offer of a 1-night stay, Stanford became our destination of choice. It was the ideal place to escape to. Stanford is just 2 hours drive from Cape Town but with so much to offer.
Just outside Hermanus, situated in a hidden valley on the Klein River near the small town of Stanford. This beautiful estate is nestled by ancient Blue gum trees. The estate is a working wine and olive farm dating back to 1839, and a well establish private, family-run guest house.
This beautiful tranquil retreat is the perfect location for a couple’s retreat, family getaway or a wedding venue. With its majestic surroundings this little paradise offers a unique rustic yet sophisticated Overberg experience.
