It’s been a while since I caught up with my girlfriends. Well more than a year to be exact. The weirdest thing is we all live in and around Cape Town. You see we all have busy schedules that is overflowing with work, kids, households etc. So, setting time aside for a meetup with friends is not always easy.
And I get it, hence what I wrote in my previous blog post about finding balance.
Although we regularly chat on whatsapp, we just can’t seem to find the perfect date for all to be available for a meetup. Hallelujah, finally we managed to agree on a date, time and venue for our meetup. Yet not everyone could make it and we ended up only being four. Friendships need to be treasured even if we don’t see each other that often; when we do it’s special. It’s about making an effort and we finally accomplished that goal.
We met up at The Yard which is situated in the Silo District at the V&A Waterfront. This trendy restaurant and concept store is the brainchild of dynamic retailer and hospitality visionary, Abigail Bisongno, and her business partner, the successful restaurateur, GP Singh. The inspiration behind The Yard came from the pairs diverse upbringings; Bisongno’s on the Winelands in South Africa and Singh’s in Punjab, India.
Since opening its door in September 2017, The Yard has grown in popularity. Dubbed a multi-faceted concept as it has so many elements in one space. Under one roof you will find a restaurant, deli, coffee shop, bar and retail section with 100% locally manufactured Artisinal gifts.
First impressions when stepping inside, I would describe the interior as Industrial Modern. The spacious interior with its concrete walls, high industrial lighting, leather seat booths and art, all fits well together. There is enough space to avoid feeling crowded, yet it is warm and cozy inside. The decor is stylish with a relaxed and modern ambiance. Seated at a beautifully decorated table which was different to the other tables in the restaurant. On making the reservation, I explained that we doing a mini surprise baby shower for one of the friends. To make it extra special, we received complimentary bubble and of course a non-alcoholic beverage to the expectant mom to be.
So caught up in conversation we realised 35 minutes has passed and we didn’t order anything to eat. I was really looking forward to the food and there were so many mouthwatering options on the menu. As some of the menu items were not familiar to us, the waiter was really kind to explain and give us some suggestions. Not opting for a starter, we all decided to order mains. I ordered the Butter Chicken with Roti and a side dish of Dahl. Indian food tend to be extremely hot and spicy but I can guarantee you that this meal was beautiful. It did not leave my mouth burning or my stomach feeling uncomfortable. My friends ordered Roast Butternut Rosotti, Tandoori Chicken Salad and Chicken Gostoso. All I can say they raved about the food as it was so good. After being stuffed, we had no space left for dessert.
Conversations flowed and we laughed so much. It was great to reminisce about the good old days and to talk about what is currently happening in our lives.
Finally, the surprise was revealed. Handing over the gifts to my friend, Qanita, was priceless. Despite having no expectations on receiving gifts, she felt loved and spoiled. A wonderful surprise indeed.
Irrespective of our busy schedules, it is wonderful when we can put time aside and have the opportunity to get together. Hoping the friends who couldn’t join us will be available for the next meetup.
The Yard is a vibey restaurant with amazing food. The portion sizes are generous which left us satisfied. Let’s just say I will be visiting this restaurant soon to sample their starters, tapas and dessert.
The Yard also host Afternoon High Tea from Tuesday to Saturday as well as Jazzy Sunday Brunch every Sunday. Visit The Yard for more information.
